Pres. Boakai Stresses An Independent Judiciary

President Joseph N. Boakai, Sr. has underscored the importance of a strong and independent judiciary, terming it as essential to upholding democracy. 

 

In a speech delivered Monday, March 10, 2025, to members of the judiciary at the opening of the March Term of Court in Monrovia, President Boakai lauded the commitment of the judiciary to dispense justice without fear or favor.

 

He urged the judiciary to remain steadfast and focused on their mission to ensure that justice is served to all who appear before them. 

 

The President's words underscored the pivotal role that the judiciary plays in upholding the rule of law and protecting democratic principles.

 

“The Rule of Law is the third pillar in our ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development,” President Boakai noted, adding, “we intend to work with the judiciary to ensure that the requirements and conditions for a fully functioning judiciary are met.

 

The Liberian leader mentioned the importance of an impartial and efficient judiciary in sustaining democracy, ensuring access to justice, and fostering national development.  

 

He acknowledged the contributions of past Chief Justices, particularly Samuel Benedict and Louis Arthur Grimes, whose legal legacies continue to shape Liberia’s justice system. 

 

President Boakai urged the current judiciary to uphold these principles by delivering justice without fear or favor.  

 

Our goal is to uphold the rule of law and ensure that justice is served in a fair and timely manner.

 

The President also emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and professionalism within the judiciary to ensure that justice is served fairly and impartially.

 

President Boakai also highlighted the need for a strong and efficient judicial system to address the challenges facing Liberia and to ensure that the rights of all citizens are protected, as he indicated that it is the role of the judiciary in promoting accountability and transparency in governance.

 

 He stressed the need for collaboration between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government to work together effectively in the interest of the Liberian people. 

 

President Boakai praised the efforts of the judiciary in recent years to strengthen its capacity and independence.

He pledged to work with the judiciary making sure that the requirements and conditions for a fully functional judiciary branch of government through support for the judiciary and for a commitment to building a strong and independent judicial system that can effectively address the challenges facing the country.

President Boakai extended heartfelt congratulations to Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene Yuoh for her dedication and commitment to upholding the rule of law and promoting justice, which he said have been truly admirable. 

 

“Your legacy will continue to inspire future generations of legal professionals. Thank you for your service and best wishes for the next chapter in your life,” he noted.

 

The Supreme Court’s March Term opening marks the beginning of a new judicial cycle, where cases of national significance will be heard.
