Government Begins Soil Mapping Exercise Nationwide

The Liberian Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, has launched a major soil mapping campaign nationwide aimed at transforming agriculture through science, innovation, and data-driven farming methods.
The soil mapping campaign dubbed"Soil4Liberia," which is the first time in Liberia, kicked off in Bong County.
In Bong County, a specialized field team is currently conducting soil sampling, soil profile analysis, land-use and land-cover assessment.

Information Minister Jerolinmek M. Piah told Journalists at the Ministry of Information's regular press briefing on Tuesday, May 21, that the soil mapping campaign will cover all 15 counties in Liberia.
Minister Piah said the exercise will help experts determine which crops grow best in specific areas, the nutrients the soil requires, how to improve yields sustainably, and how land can be managed more efficiently.

He said the findings will lead to the development of Liberia's ever-soil sustainability map, fertility and nutrition maps, acidity maps, and Land-use and Land-cover maps. The initiative will lead to the establishment of Liberia's first National Digital Soil Information Center and a platform that will provide farmers, researchers, policymakers, and development partners with reliable agriculture data into making smarter decisions and increase productivity.
