U.S. Embassy Commends GoL On Landmark Appointment To War, Economic Crimes Court

MONROVIA, Nov. 5 (LINA) – The United States Embassy near Monrovia has commended the Government of Liberia (GOL) for appointing Cllr. Jallah A. Barbu as Executive Director of the War and Economic Crimes Court (WECC), tas a significant milestone in Liberia's pursuit of justice for past atrocities.
On November 1, 2024, President Joseph N. Boakai announced Cllr. Barbu’s appointment, following a recommendation from a Search Committee that recognized Barbu’s extensive experience and qualifications as ideally suited for the role. The court is expected to bring justice for crimes committed during Liberia’s civil wars from 1989 to 2003.
In a statement shared on its official social media page, the U.S. Embassy praised the selection process, which was led by Liberia’s Justice Minister, N. Oswald Tweh, for its inclusivity.
"We applaud the Liberian Government and specifically Justice Minister Tweh for an inclusive selection process," the embassy stated. "We stand ready to support Cllr. Barbu and all Liberians as they establish a court to bring justice for the victims of the gravest crimes committed during Liberia’s civil wars."
The US Embassy expressed eagerness to collaborate with Cllr. Barbu, underscoring the significance of the WECC in advancing justice and accountability in Liberia.
Cllr. Barbu’s background includes prominent roles as Head of the Law Reform Commission and Dean of the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law at the University of Liberia, among other distinguished positions.
His appointment is seen as a strategic move in Liberia’s long-standing effort to address the wounds of its past.
Meanwhile, President Boakai, who signed an executive order to establish the WECC, has described the court as a historic development in Liberia's journey toward reconciliation and healing.
The President voiced his confidence in Cllr. Barbu's dedication to the role, citing his commitment to justice and integrity.
As Liberia takes this significant step toward redress for civil war victims, President Boakai called on Cllr. Barbu to uphold high standards of diligence, professionalism, and loyalty in service to the nation.
