LRRRC Calls For Calm In Payment Of Resettlement Packages To Returnees

By Rancy S. Teewia

The Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC) has admonished Liberian Returnees from Ghana to remain calm as they are making all efforts to conclude the payment of their resettlement packages.

Speaking in a brief dialogue with the returnees on September 9, 2024, at the LRRRC’s Headquarters in Congo Town, the Deputy Executive Director for Operations at the LRRRC, Richard Hoff disclosed that the Acting Chair of the Cabinet Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh has approved the payment of the last 400 returnees who temporarily reside at the Johnsonville Transit Center.

Mr. Hoff said out of the 1,536 Liberian returnees from Ghana, the LRRRC has paid the resettlement packages of 1,136 returnees and the payment of the last 400 persons will begin on the 17th of September 2024.

At the same time, the LRRRC Deputy Executive Director for Operations noted that the Government of Liberia through LRRRC is working with the United Nations High Commission for Refugee (UNHCR) and other partners to ensure that kids of the returnees are in school.

Three months ago, the Government of Liberia through the LRRRC brought back home over 1,500 Liberia refugees from Ghana following the Ghanaian government’s decision to demolish the Budumburam Camp.

The Budumburam Refugee Camp had been a refuge for many Liberians who fled the country’s 14-year civil war.
