As part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to garner broad-based support for Liberiaโs bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026โ2027 term, a delegation from the Republic of Liberia visited Sรฃo Tomรฉ and Prรญncipe on May 19, 2025. The delegation, led by Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Toga Gayewea McIntosh, and including Assistant Minister and Chief of Staff Madam Saran Kaba Jones, held a meeting with His Excellency Carlos Manuel Vila Nova, President of the Republic of Sรฃo Tomรฉ and Prรญncipe.

During the meeting, Ambassador McIntosh formally delivered a Special Message and Letter from His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., President of the Republic of Liberia. The message conveyed Liberiaโs formal request for Sรฃo Tomรฉ and Prรญncipeโs invaluable support in the upcoming UNSC elections scheduled for June 3, 2025 in New York. Ambassador McIntosh emphasized Liberiaโs commitment to multilateralism, peace, and regional cooperation, and reaffirmed that Liberia, if elected, would serve as a strong voice for Africa.

His Excellency President Vila Nova received the message with appreciation and commended Liberiaโs initiative. He assured the delegation that the request would be given positive consideration. The President further underscored the critical importance of Africa securing a permanent seat on the Security Council and expressed hope that Liberia, if elected, would advance this collective cause. He also welcomed the opportunity to deepen bilateral relations between Liberia and Sรฃo Tomรฉ and Prรญncipe. The Liberian delegation is scheduled to continue its diplomatic mission in Libreville, Gabon.
