Government Cautions Public Against Dead Toxin Fishes On Beaches
The Liberian Government, through the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority, has cautioned the public against the sale, purchase, and consumption of what it describes as dangerous and poisonous dead fish species appearing on the shores of the Marshall beach in Margibi County.
The government identified these fish species as pufferfish, blowfish, and balloonfish, which, it said, are being washed on the shores of beaches in Marshall since last week, are very dangerous for human consumption.
The government said these species of fish contained powerful toxins of tetrodotoxin in the liver, ovaries, intestines, and skin, which, even when cooked or dried, are still extremely dangerous to both humans and animals.
The government warned the general public that consuming any of these toxin fishes could cause serious health complications, including paralysis and even death.
The government said poison and toxins from these dangerous fish species attack the human nervous system and that there is no immediate medicine for treatment.
The government admonished fishermen who accidentally caught these fish species to carefully and immediately return them to the ocean.
It advises fishmongers and coastal communities to report any catch of these dangerous fish species to the nearest local Fisheries authority and that pet owners must also keep animals away from these dead pufferfish washed on the shores of beaches.
