MONROVIA, June 20 (LINA) – President Joseph N. Boakai has appointed Cllr. Jonathan Massaquoi as Executive Director to Liberia’s Office of War and Economic Crimes Court, aligning with the Executive Order establishing the office.

The Liberian leader made the appointment on June 20, 2024, where he expressed confidence in Cllr. Massaquoi’s capability to expedite its full implementation.

The Liberian leader emphasized the importance of setting up the office of the War and Economic Crimes Court in advancing peace, sustainable development, and prosperity.

President Boakai urged Cllr. Massaquoi to diligently ensure the office's success, trusting in his dedication and loyalty to the nation.

The setting up of the War and Economic Crimes Court follows President Boakai's signing of Executive Order #131, which authorized mechanisms to prosecute individuals who are accountable for war and economic crimes during Liberia's civil conflicts.

It marks the culmination of a decades-long effort to bring justice to victims of the country’s two civil wars, which killed an estimated 250,000 people from 1989 to 2003.

According to the executive order, the Office of War and Economic Crimes Court is mandated to investigate, formulate, and recommend methodologies, mechanisms, and procedures for establishing both a Special War Crimes Court and a National Anti-Corruption Court for Liberia.
