54-Year-Old Hunter Dies After Allegedly Shooting Himself In Maryland

 A 54-year-old hunter in Gortoken, Barrobo Statutory District, Maryland County, has died after he allegedly shot himself during a hunting expedition.

According to police report, on Friday, September 6, 2024, the deceased, identified as Benecesaw Teawea left his home with his 16-year-old son for a hunting trip during which he accidentally shot himself with his single barrier shotgun.

The son of the deceased, Godtime Teewea, told police investigators that the situation occurred two hours away from town when his father was allegedly in pursuit of a cassava snake along a riverbank leaving his shotgun on the grass in an unsafe mode.  

He told police that his father had earlier taken the cassava snake for a boa constrictor and was about to pull the trigger of his weapon, but later decided to leave his weapon on the grass and pursue his prey after he realized it was a cassava snake.  

According to him, his father returned without a catch and later decided to retrieve his shotgun by allegedly picking it up with the muzzle pointed at himself, adding that the gun which trigger was already activated, discharged into the belly of his father and severely injured him.

Following the incident, the deceased was rushed to town and taken to a local health facility in the area but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The deceased is a Liberian from Barrobo and a resident of Gortorken, Maryland County who has been hunting for many years, according to family sources.

Meanwhile, further investigation into the matter has been initiated by the police.
