The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA)reports severe windstorms have destroyed 298 homes in six towns situated in Bong, Gbarpolu and Nimba Counties affecting 1,863 persons last Saturday.

A team of first responders from NDMA were dispatched to the affected towns:  Weasua in Gbapolu; Janplee, Garmue, and Pantah in Bong County, and Zoeplaygbor in Nimba, says the head of the agency, Ansu Dulleh at the MICAT’s Regular Press Briefing on Thursday.

From the NDMA’s initial assessment, the highest affected persons are located in Gbarpolu County accounting for 769 persons and the rest are in Bong and Nimba Counties, Dulleh said.  

The NDMA, quoting the “World Bank Group Climate Risk Profile-2024 for Liberia", is predicting “rainfall patterns this year will increase extremely, accompanied by windstorms and a one-meter sea level rise”

It says the rainfall will pose health risks related to flood impacts, agricultural yields, disease outbreaks, and critical infrastructure for water, sanitation and hygiene…”
The agency advises the public to remain on alert.
