40% of Liberia’s Internet Connectivity Restored, Says Cable Consortium of Liberia (CCL)
THE PROBLEM
Last Thursday at about 4:46am, Liberia experienced a fiber cut/cable break on the ACE (Africa Cable to Europe) Submarine Cable Network in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean around Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. The ACE cable network provides internet, data, and broadband communications.
The other cable network outages at the same location in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire were SAT3, Main-One, and WACS causing a major global situation in the area. Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone are countries which depend on ACE Cable as their only source of internet and broadband connectivity.
CURRENT EFFORTS FOR RESTORATION
- Isolate the areas of the fiber cut/cable break and commencing with investigation and repair schedule.
- Re-route and redirect broadband traffic on available network capacity.
- To-date, 40% of Liberia’s internet capacity has been restored, however, slow connectivity on the network will occur from time to time.
- Repair works are ongoing to ensure that the cable is back at 100% recovery.
- Deplore the relevant technical resources (ships) to Abidjan so the repair works can commence. The turn around time to assemble the ship, perform the repairs and complete the full recovery is between seven to eight weeks.
CONSUMERS’ PATIENCE
ACE and CCL are appealing to the consuming public for patience as we closely monitor the state of the network for immediate response to outages.
The ACE cable network runs 17,000 km along the West Coast of Africa, connecting 19 countries including France, Portugal, the Canary Islands (Spain), Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, São Tomé and Príncipe, Mali, Niger, and South Africa, who recently joined the ACE Consortium.
