Government Takes Action to Combat Rabies in Liberia

MONROVIA, June 18 (LINA) – In an essential public health move, the Government of Liberia has issued an urgent advisory to address the escalating threat of rabies. 

The Ministry of Health release issued on Tuesday, called on individuals who have been bitten by dogs or are suspected of having rabies to seek immediate medical attention at Redemption Hospital, Duport Road Health Center, and James David Jr. Hospital.

The advisory aims to ensure that those affected by rabies receive prompt medical examination and appropriate care, a critical step in preventing the potentially deadly consequences of the disease.

The Ministry's prompt action underscores the government’s commitment to protecting public health and safety.

Further enhancing these efforts, the government is preparing to apply to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) seekıng international support to acquire and distribute rabies vaccines across Liberia.

The ministry emphasized that the initiative represents a proactive approach to managing and preventing rabies cases, at the same time demonstrating the government’s dedication to comprehensive public health measures.

The government strategy not only includes immediate medical advisories, but also long-term plans to improve vaccination coverage and raise public awareness about rabies prevention. 

The release furthered that the Ministry of Health is coordinating with local health facilities to ensure they are prepared to handle rabies cases and provide essential care.

In addition to medical interventions, the government through the Ministry of Health is also focusing on community outreach programs to educate the public about rabies prevention, safe interactions with animals, and the importance of timely medical treatment following dog bites.

These programs are vital in building community resilience and ensuring a widespread understanding of rabies risks and prevention strategies.
